Cody’s Books, the quintessential bay area bookstore, is open daily from 10-10. While it may not have as many copies of the latest John Grisham as your local B&N superstore, its staff is extremely knowledgeable, and you can find a book on just about anything at Cody’s. From Cody’s, either return to the BART station the same way you came, or turn left onto Dwight, making a right when you reach Shattuck. Take a Daly/City Colma train for the 25 minute trip into the city ($2.65; on Sundays and holidays, you must take a Fremont train and change at MacArthur).

Get off at the Powell Street station, exit, and get in line for a Powell-Hyde line cable car ($2). Take the car to the end of the line (Hyde and Beach), where you will find bike rentals for $5/hour from American Rentals, 2715 Hyde Street, 415-931-0234 (M-Su, 9-9).
