The Phantom of the Opera February 26, 2010
Andrew Lloyd Webber’s critic-proof megahit had a profound effect on musical theatre. Based on Gaston Leroux’s tragic love story, ‘The Phantom’ revolves around a beautiful novice Christine, Raoul, her adoring fan, and a masked mentor who keeps lurking in the wings. At the end, the Phantom gives up his life and sits on his throne, waiting for a lynch mob to break into his lair. You can knock Webber all you want but audiences still leave the theatre humming ‘Music of the Night’.

Many are pieces by British artists living and working in India, as well as many court paintings and portraits from the famous Rajasthan kingdoms. All contain a fascinating depth of emotion that should open the eyes and minds of art lovers unfamiliar with the Indian continent.
